The Mitosafe® technology
The Mitosafe® technology is a cellular biological system approach based on the analysis of the mitochondrial functioning inside the living cell. It uses the mechanistic knowledge of mitochondrial targets and their interactions to study in isolation or in integration the effect of drugs on the mitochondrial system.
Mitochondria as a target
Mitochondria are at the core of the pathophysiology for chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, neurodegeneration and ageing. We thus propose selective secondary screening in vitro models to qualify actives with:
- anti oxydant properties
- anti-age properties
- protectant against mitochondrial DNA damage
Validated models are constantly being implemented in our laboratory; please consult us for the most recent updates or for specific development.
The mechanistic approach to identifying mitochondrial liabilities
Mitochondrial liabilities are thought to be responsible for 30 to 40% of previously undetected clinical tolerance problems (Will & Dickens). Identifying mitochondrial liabilities early has become a pre-requisite to IND submission in the development of anti-virals and is recommended by FDA and EMA for drug-induced liver injury anticipation at the preclinical stage.
ICDD is expert in the study of the mitochondrial function in live cells and uses human in vitro models to characterize:
- Mitochondrial DNA content
- Reactive oxygen species production
- Oxygen consumption
- Lactic acid production
- ATP production
- Cell viability
- Mitochondrial membrane potential
We have furthermore integrated several of these measurements multiplexed inside the same cell to obtain a cellular biological system analysis: the bioenergetic balance screen (BBS) capable of alerting for mitochondrial liability of compounds in a high throughput.
